The Human Computer

Here is another quote from The Inner Journey (http://www.higherawareness.com/) that has got me thinking:

"Everything -- absolutely everything -- that happens in our lives has a spiritual cause. Events on all other levels -- mental, emotional and physical -- are only effects.

When we are struggling with any challenge, whether it be ill health, a lack of money, a lost job, relationships, an accident, whatever -- we need to look for the spiritual learning. We can ask ourselves, "What quality does my soul want me to live more fully?"

Everything? Really? That is such a hard concept for us to grasp because we are not taught in our societies, families and schools about all the underlying work that occurs behind our everyday reality. What if life can be compared to computer programming: It’s like our lives are the finished product. What we see everyday is the final draft, our front screen. When we see words and buttons on a computer screen we may think they are just words and the buttons are some magical things that somehow move us to other screens and somehow the data is captured. But really we have no clue on how things change and reformat. So we just follow along and do our part in typing/reacting to what we see on the screen, trusting that somehow the computer will work correctly in a predictable way. But a computer programmer knows that there is a whole world of ‘behind the scenes’ work that goes into getting the final front page. There are imbedded instructions, programs and hardware that govern what you will see on your computer screen. And you know if you have learned the language you can make the computer screen show and do anything you want. And you know there are no unimportant errors. If you put a space or a period in the wrong place, or miss-spell something, your program may not work. Everything decision, every connection, every keystroke counts in your final product. If you don’t see what you want in your front screen then you just go back in and change the code or check the hardware. No judgment goes into whether the computer is bad or good, it is just following your instructions. You just change your instructions and see if you get your desired effect. But if you don’t know the program or anything about computers, then you don’t have control over what you see and you just have to follow along with what’s already there. You may even say how much you hate this computer or how the computer is out to get you and mess up your work and you blame the computer. But really you have no control to change it…because you don’t know how.

What if life is that way too? What if there are universal laws that govern our reality and experiences in life? What if there are layers of cause and effect that create our “this day”? What if everything you thought and did had a subtle effect on this day: every little decision, every physical action, every intention, every word spoken, every fearful or loving thought, every perception of your life had an effect on what showed up in your awareness. If we’re not aware of them, then ‘YES’ we are not in control of our reality and must just react and do damage control on what happens everyday. But if we learn the instructions of life then we can realize the connection between what is going on inside us and what happens outside us.
